Rev. Archpriest Uriy Markewych, 83, of Fleetwood, Pa., went to sleep with the Lord Wednesday morning April 27, 2022. He was born in Vynnyky, Ukraine, a son of the late Dmytro and Anna (Skremeta) Markewych. He was a graduate of St. Basil’s Prep School and St. Basil’s Seminary College in Stamford, Conn. and Catholic University in Washington, D.C. Rev. Archpriest Uriy was Ordained April 10, 1965, in Philadelphia. Throughout his Priestly service, he served with numerous parishes: Passaic, Jersey City, Millville, Rutherford, Great Meadows, Whippany, and Ramsey in N.J.; Philadelphia (St. Josaphat), Lyndora, Nanticoke, Chester, Warrington, Plymouth, West Easton, Reading, Minersville, and Mount Carmel in Pa.; Baltimore and Curtis Bay, Md., St. Basil Prep, Conn., and St. Petersburg, Fla. He was instrumental in the building of St. Michael the Archangel Church in Baltimore. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Bohdan, Roman, and Walter. He is survived by his sister Helen Obaranec, nephews George Obaranec (Kristen), and Myron Obaranec (Carolyn) and great-nephew Andrew. Friend and caregiver was Christine Matus. Visitation is Wednesday, May 4, with calling hours 3:00 to 6:00 pm at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, Minersville, Pa. A Priestly Parastas is scheduled for 6:00 PM with the Most Rev. Reverend Borys Gudziak, Archbishop-Metropolitan for Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia celebrant. A Requiem Divine Liturgy shall be celebrated 10 AM Thursday, May 5, at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church with Main Celebrant, Most Reverend Borys Gudziak, Archbishop-Metropolitan for the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia along with clergy of the South Anthracite Deanery. Rev. Archpriest Michael Hutsko, and Reverend Mark Fesniak, Homilists. Interment will be at Our Lady of Sorrows Cemetery, Langhorne, Pa. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations made to the St. Nicholas School Fund. Mahal-Ritzel Funeral Home Inc., Minersville, entrusted with the arrangements.
