Michael Mahalchick III Obituary

Michael Mahalchick III, formerly of Pottsville, PA, passed away on May 16, 2022 at the age of 73, in Manassas, VA at home surrounded by family.

Michael was born to Michael and Conchita Mahalchick on August 21, 1948, in Manila, Philippines.  The oldest of six children, he attended Minersville HS and was described as “athletic, always smiling, a friendly personality, liked to fish, liked to help his dad, and reliable.”  After graduating in 1966, Michael played college football at Ursinus College where he graduated with a degree in Political Science and attended other educational institutes as part of his career which included: Bucknell University and the University of Oklahoma.  A banker most of his life, he worked for American Bank, Wachovia, M&T Bank, and First National Bank of Minersville. He worked briefly in the fields of insurance (Higgins Associates) and real estate (Rushanan & DeStefano) and also owned and operated a nightclub (Memory Lane) and restaurant (Bonanza Steakhouse). Throughout his life he was active in his community serving as a Board Member on: Penn State School Campus Advisory Board, Schuykill Technology Incubator, Schuykill YMCA, Schuykill County Industrial Development Authority, Schuykill County Crippled Children Society, Luzerne/ Schuykill Workforce Investment Board, Family Service Agency, Schuykill Economic Development Corporation, Hawk Mountain Council, Boy Scouts of America, Schuykill Employment and Training Program, Schuykill Chamber of Commerce, and Schuykill United Way. He also served on several committees which included the Schuykill County Symphony Orchestra's Capital Campaign, First Union LPGA Annual Golf Event, and Penn State Grand Destiny Capital Campaign Schuykill Campus.  He was a member and past president of the Frackville Lions Club.

He was honorably discharged from the Army National Guard of PA in April of 1976 and served as a sergeant in the 1068th Military Police Company.

Michael loved spending time socializing and interacting with people, friends, and family.  Neighbors and neighborhood children would gather around the family home and pool listening to Michael’s stories and jokes at numerous get togethers.  His door was always open.  

Michael was married to Eleanor (Sosnoski) Mahalchick of Mount Carmel, PA for 50 years.  She loved, cared for, and supported him every step of the way. Together, they had three children.

Michael is survived by his wife, Eleanor; sons Michael and partner James of New York, NY; Mark and wife, Hilary of Manassas, VA; Martin and wife, Kimberly of Denver, CO; Grandchildren: Lauren, Flynn, Mikaela, Elena, and Jackson; Siblings: Barbara Reichert (Joe), Elaine Glaser (John), Judy Purcell, Robert Mahalchick (Tracy), John Mahalchick (Jackie); numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and great nephews; and Lizzie- his beloved Beagle.

A visitation will be held Thursday June 2 with calling hours from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Mahal-Ritzel Funeral Home Inc., Minersville as well as Friday morning.    A Requiem Divine Liturgy will be celebrated Friday the 3rd at 10:00 am at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, Minersville with Reverend Mark Fesniak celebrant. Interment Parish Cemetery.
