Mark Christopher Moerder, 60, of Branch Township passed away on Sunday, February 23, 2025, at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania Pavillion, Philadelphia after a battle with cancer. Mark was the youngest and “favorite” of the four children of Mary Patricia “Pat” (Duffy) and Marvin Claude “Big Jack” Moerder. He is survived by his two sons, Matthew and Nathaniel, his mother, Pat, and siblings, David (Karin Duke), Jack (Karen Spicer), and Wendy (Dan) James, in addition to several nieces and nephews including Adam, Morgan, Evan and Danielle plus countless cousins. Mark was a handsome and genuinely nice guy who excelled academically, athletically and even musically.not to mention with the ladies. He was a standout out athlete at Minersville High School, playing football and basketball. Throughout his career, he was the quarterback, defensive back and field goal kicker and played in the 1982 Class C Eastern Conference Championship game and for the 1983 Schuylkill County Football All-Star team. He still holds the record for Minersville’s longest field goal at 46 yards. His contributions earned him the Schuylkill County Scholar Athlete Award in 1983. His talent in golf led him to a successful career as a PGA professional. After leaving Penn State he worked as the golf professional at the Center Hills Country Club in State College, PA, Aberdeen Country Club in Boynton Beach, Fl and Radley Run Country Club in West Chester, PA. His younger son Nathaniel shares his dad’s athletic genes and excels as both a football quarterback and a skilled young golfer. Mark was not one dimensional and exceled in many things, including music. He played the bass guitar, and he sang in the concert choir in high school. He also sang random country, Jimmy Buffet or Pearl Jam songs very loudly around the house whether you liked it or not – and he was famous for knowing all the words. His son, Matthew, is following in his dad’s footsteps as a great guitarist. Mark "The Shark", enjoyed going to Billy Angelo’s cabin with his long-time high school friends, “The Jimno’s.” He also loved going to the family cabin in Potter County where he skied, fished, snowmobiled, rode the ATV, and hung out with his dad and friends on his weekends off. He especially loved taking his kids there. Above all else, Mark’s passion was his two handsome young sons – he was so proud of them. He loved family, friends and beer. He never missed a chance to be with loved ones and have a beer and a card game. He will be missed for his easy way, positive attitude and his dedication to those he loved. All are respectfully invited to attend a Visitation Saturday, March 15 from 9:00am – noon at the Mahal-Ritzel Funeral Home 104 South 4th Street in Minersville.
